Design the whole load path
A beam carries loads into the structure below it. The design therefore needs to consider what the beam supports, how it is restrained and how its reactions are transferred through bearings, posts or other supports. A span measurement alone is not enough to select a suitable member.
An opening that fits your plans
Tell us the opening width you would like, the floors or roof above it and any restrictions on ceiling depth or exposed steel. Photographs and architectural drawings help us review the brief. Some details of the existing structure may need confirmation through agreed investigations.
Useful information for the next stage
Your agreed design package can include beam calculations and the supporting details needed for the proposed arrangement. Fabrication information, temporary works and installation planning are separate matters unless specifically included in the appointment. Agree these responsibilities before ordering steel or starting structural work.

Common questions
Can you give me a beam size from an opening width?
The opening width is only part of the information needed. Loads, supports, existing construction and the proposed arrangement must also be assessed before a project-specific design can be produced.
Do you design supports as well as the RSJ?
Where required by the agreed structural scope, we consider the beam’s bearings, posts and load transfer. The quotation will identify included details and any further information needed.
